Shengjia Zhao, a key figure behind OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has been appointed chief scientist of Meta’s newly established Superintelligence Labs, as announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Threads. Zhao, who joined Meta in June, will set the research agenda and drive the scientific vision of the lab, collaborating closely with Zuckerberg and AI chief Alexandr Wang. With extensive experience at OpenAI, where he contributed to developing GPT-4 and innovative scaling paradigms, Zhao is poised to play a pivotal role in Meta’s AI ambitions. This appointment aligns with Meta’s strategy to restructure its AI operations and compete with rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. The company is investing significantly, pledging “hundreds of billions of dollars” into AI infrastructure to create accessible “personal superintelligence.” Zuckerberg emphasized Zhao’s foundational role in leading the lab from inception, further solidifying Meta’s commitment to advancing technology and attracting top AI talent.
