WorldFish’s SmartCatch, an innovative AI tool, recently received the coveted AI for Planet Prize at the 2025 AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva. Targeted at low-resource coastal communities, SmartCatch empowers artisanal fishers to document their daily catch using simple mobile phone photos. AI algorithms analyze the images to estimate fish species, size, and weight, providing immediate feedback even without continuous internet access. This tool emerged from WorldFish’s Wavemakers Challenge, highlighting the need to support small-scale fisheries that sustain over 100 million people but often remain invisible in policy frameworks. SmartCatch is part of the broader AI Small-Scale Fisheries Sustainability Suite, which includes additional tools like AskData and EcoRoute aimed at enhancing data equity and climate resilience. With its recognition, SmartCatch places small-scale fisheries on the global AI stage, epitomizing how accessible technology can foster empowerment and sustainability in marine environments amid increasing ocean health challenges.
