SoftBank Elevates Its Investment in OpenAI to 11% Stake

Japanese tech giant SoftBank Group Corp has increased its stake in OpenAI to approximately 11% following the completion of a US$41 billion investment, marking a significant pivot towards artificial intelligence (AI). This investment includes US$30 billion from SoftBank’s Vision Fund and US$11 billion from third-party co-investors. Founder Masayoshi Son expressed alignment with OpenAI’s mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits humanity. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized the strategic partnership, noting that SoftBank’s global leadership accelerates the advancement of AI technologies. Additionally, the two companies, along with Oracle Corp, are spearheading the ambitious US$500 billion Stargate project aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure in the U.S. This week, SoftBank also announced its acquisition of DigitalBridge Group Inc. for about US$4 billion, further solidifying its commitment to the AI sector.
