Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has acquired UK startup Cinemersive Labs, known for its innovative tools that transform 2D photos and videos into immersive 3D volumes. This acquisition bolsters Sony’s Visual Computing Group, which specializes in advanced graphical technologies like game rendering, video coding, and generative AI models. Cinemersive’s flagship product, the Parallax VR app, allows users to explore three-dimensional images using standard smartphones and stereo lenses, showcasing their custom AI capabilities in image conversion. Following the acquisition, the Cinemersive team will enhance SIE’s initiatives in visual computing, focusing on machine learning to elevate gameplay visuals and rendering techniques, contributing to heightened visual fidelity on platforms like PlayStation 5. This move aligns with Sony’s ongoing strategy to improve graphical performance via custom AI technologies, including PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). SIE is also collaborating with AMD on Project Amethyst to advance ray tracing and upscaling for future consoles, ensuring cutting-edge gaming experiences.
