Sora Clones Swarm Apple’s App Store: Here Are the Ones That Still Exist

Following the launch of OpenAI’s invite-only mobile app, “Sora,” the Apple App Store saw a surge in imitation apps claiming to be “Sora” or “Sora 2.” These counterfeit apps, which exploited OpenAI’s trademarked name, managed to bypass Apple’s App Review process and were publicly listed on the store, raising consumer concern. App intelligence platform Appfigures revealed over a dozen “Sora”-branded apps appeared following the official release, with at least half using “Sora 2” in their titles. Notably, the largest impersonator, “Sora 2 – AI Video Generator,” gained over 50,000 installs post-launch. Overall, the rogue apps amassed around 300,000 installations, generating over $160,000. Despite many being removed by Apple, some impostors remain available, highlighting ongoing issues with app scrutiny on the platform. While OpenAI’s official app hit 1 million downloads, the prevalence of misleading alternatives raises concerns about consumer trust in app stores.
