OpenAI’s video-generating app, Sora, has achieved remarkable success, surpassing ChatGPT in its debut week on the U.S. App Store. According to Appfigures data, Sora garnered 627,000 iOS downloads in its first week, outperforming ChatGPT’s 606,000. Notably, Sora reached one million downloads in under five days, despite being invite-only and initially available only in the U.S. and Canada. On launch day, it advanced to the No. 3 overall app, reaching No. 1 by October 3. Daily downloads peaked at 107,800 on October 1, with consistent adoption observed throughout its early days. The app allows users to create realistic deepfakes, generating significant discussions on social media, including concerns from Zelda Williams regarding the use of AI to recreate deceased individuals. This early success marks Sora as a standout in the AI app landscape, outpacing competitors like Anthropic’s Claude and Microsoft’s Copilot.
