Sora’s CEO Bill Peebles Unveils OpenAI’s Strategy for Monetizing Its AI Video Generation App

OpenAI has launched a paid option for users of its AI video creation app, Sora, allowing them to generate videos beyond the daily limit. Users can now purchase ten extra video generations for $4, while the free cap of 30 daily videos remains unchanged for now. Bill Peebles, head of Sora, confirmed this monetization strategy on X, highlighting that Pro users can generate up to 100 videos per day, though higher-cost configurations may reduce this allowance. Peebles emphasized the unsustainable nature of unlimited free usage due to limited computing power. The update also introduces cameo characters for generating content featuring pets and objects, which aligns with a future monetization model for creators. Additionally, OpenAI temporarily lifted Sora sign-up restrictions in the US and Canada. However, challenges include a lawsuit from Cameo over the use of the term and ongoing restrictions to mitigate copyright concerns.
