Southern Water is implementing an advanced artificial intelligence tool to enhance its wastewater network’s reliability by predicting equipment failures. Collaborating with Samotics, this innovative solution, SAM4, targets submerged pumps, identifying early signs of mechanical issues, electrical faults, and blockages. Following a successful pilot in 2024, Southern Water plans to deploy up to 3,500 devices throughout 2025 across the South East.
The SAM4 tool functions by monitoring normal operational patterns, allowing it to trigger alerts when deviations occur. It meticulously collects 20,000 datapoints per second to detect wear and performance anomalies, significantly reducing the risk of unplanned service interruptions.
Daniel McElhinney from Southern Water emphasized the importance of mitigating such failures to protect customer service and the environment while cutting operational costs. Tom Swain of Samotics praised SAM4 as the premier solution for remotely monitoring challenging pump systems, enabling timely and efficient maintenance interventions.
