State and IIT-B Develop AI Tool to Identify Illegal Bangladeshi Nationals

The Maharashtra government, collaborating with IIT Bombay, is developing a language-based AI tool designed to identify potentially illegal Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas in the state. This ₹3-crore initiative, led by the IT department, aims to assist law enforcement by analyzing speech patterns, tone, and linguistic markers as a preliminary screening method before detailed nationality investigations. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized the tool’s potential to deport suspected individuals effectively, highlighting the challenge posed by document verification, as many suspected individuals possess authentic-seeming identity cards. The tool, currently in an experimental phase with a 60% accuracy rate, aims to achieve 100% within six months. It addresses issues surrounding fake documents, as police struggles intensify without firm grounds for questioning. Fadnavis also noted the significant linguistic overlap between West Bengal and Bangladesh complicating identification. A detention center for deportation preparations has been established as part of this strategy.
