State Department Reveals AI Voiced Marco Rubio in Messages to Top Officials

Share

A recent State Department cable reveals that an unidentified individual or group used artificial intelligence to impersonate Secretary of State Marco Rubio, contacting at least five high-level government officials in June. The cable, reported by NBC News, indicates that the impersonator aimed to manipulate targets through AI-generated text and voice messages to obtain sensitive information. Recipients included three foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a member of Congress. The impersonator used a misleading Signal nickname, linked to a non-functional email address. This incident parallels a prior FBI investigation into impersonation attempts of U.S. officials, including that of Trump’s chief of staff. The State Department is actively investigating the situation, emphasizing its commitment to cybersecurity and information protection amidst rising threats from generative AI technologies. Diplomats have been alerted to warn external partners about potential cyber threats involving impersonation of State officials.
