The North Carolina State Auditor’s Office has released a report assessing the effectiveness of a pilot program utilizing OpenAI’s ChatGPT to enhance productivity within the State Treasury. Conducted in collaboration with NC Central’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Research, the report reveals how AI has improved operational efficiency, yielding time savings of 30 to 60 minutes daily for employees, ultimately enhancing productivity by around 10%. State Treasurer Brad Briner emphasized that integrating AI with human expertise is crucial for achieving workplace growth. However, the report also acknowledges limitations, including inaccuracies and reliance on users to validate information, as noted by director Siobahn Day Grady. With 26 participants from various roles, feedback showed 85% had positive experiences, despite some struggling with the technology’s complexity. The study underscores the transformative potential of generative AI in public sector operations, while also highlighting the importance of proper training and caution in its use.
