Students in Summer Program Create AI Tools to Enhance Faculty Research – The Source

This summer, students in WashU’s Digital Transformation Summer Corps developed innovative AI-driven tools to advance interdisciplinary research projects. The initiative, part of the Digital Intelligence & Innovation (DI2) Accelerator, focused on enhancing digital skills among participants while tackling pressing societal questions. One prominent project involved creating a user-friendly chatbot to assist researchers in accessing and utilizing WashU’s high-performance computing resources, thereby lowering technological barriers. Additionally, students developed AI models to evaluate neighborhood safety and greenery, enabling more efficient urban assessments. The St. Louis Dashboard, an interactive data visualization platform, also received enhancements through collaboration with faculty. With mentorship and a “failure is an option” philosophy, participants exceeded expectations in their projects, contributing to a stronger AI-capable academic community. The program not only fosters research acceleration but also prepares a new generation of graduates for success in an AI-driven economy, affirming WashU’s commitment to transformative education.
