The OIA emphasizes the limitations of such software, particularly regarding potential biases against international students and those with disabilities. Recent case summaries revealed complaints where students claimed detection tools inaccurately flagged their work, impacting their academic outcomes. For instance, an autistic student received a zero after being wrongfully accused of AI use, while an international student wrongly penalized after using Grammarly was also upheld by the OIA. The guidance highlights that institutions must base decisions on a multitude of evidence and recognize that AI detection tools may not fairly assess non-native English speakers. This intervention comes amid rising concerns about generative AI’s influence on academic integrity. Institutions are urged to reconsider their reliance on AI detection systems.
