Study Finds Decline in Korean Students’ Motivation to Learn English Due to Rise of AI Tools

In Ulsan, first-year students at Ehwa Middle School utilize AI-powered digital textbooks in English classes, highlighting a growing trend in South Korea’s education system. Following a pilot program, the school was recognized as a national model for digital instruction. However, a recent report from the Ministry of Education reveals a concerning decline in middle school students’ motivation to learn English, with only 61.3% expressing interest—a significant drop from previous years. The rise of AI translation tools is contributing to this trend, prompting students to question the necessity of studying English.
