Data centers powering artificial intelligence are increasingly straining Lake Michigan and regional water systems, raising concerns over potential water shortages. A recent report by the Alliance for the Great Lakes highlights that these facilities demand substantial energy and water, making them attractive to tech companies. However, Lake Michigan, a finite freshwater resource vital for over 40 million residents, faces significant risks without stricter regulations. The report reveals that data centers could consume more than 365 million gallons of water annually, equivalent to the use of 12,000 people. The expected surge in data center capacity by 2030, driven by generative AI, could lead to the U.S. consuming up to 150 billion gallons of water over five years. Helena Volzer emphasizes the need for transparency and public disclosure regarding water usage. Innovative solutions, such as utilizing stormwater management systems for cooling, could mitigate these challenges if properly planned.
