The Taiwanese weather app “Raining Bell” has received an innovative upgrade, integrating an AI-powered voice assistant named “Firefly.” Users can now inquire about weather forecasts using spoken Mandarin or Taiwanese Hokkien, enhancing accessibility particularly for seniors who may find traditional interfaces challenging. Launched in 2020, the app has surpassed 370,000 downloads and now offers three-day rainfall forecasts instead of the previous three-and-a-half hours. This update stems from a partnership with the National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC) and the Central Weather Administration (CWA), focusing on generating accurate, localized weather data through Taiwan’s Trustworthy AI Dialogue Engine (TAIDE). Development of the voice assistant took about five months, facing technical challenges in integrating data from multiple sources. Future plans include expanding the voice function to Indigenous languages and adding features for weather photo uploads. This AI innovation makes accessing daily weather information more intuitive and user-friendly.
