Teachers Express Concerns About AI Harming Students’ Critical Thinking, But Many Teens Are Unconvinced

A recent College Board report reveals significant concerns among educators regarding students’ reliance on generative AI tools for completing assignments. A staggering 89% of principals worry that AI may foster dependency on technology for fundamental tasks, while 87% fear it could hinder critical thinking skills. Conversely, only 42% of students view cheating as a major issue with AI, and just 45% believe it could undermine their memory or learning. The report notes a rise in AI usage among high schoolers, jumping from 79% to 84% within months. Jessica Howell, VP of Research at College Board, stresses the need for further research on AI’s long-term impact on cognitive development. Schools are also struggling with AI literacy, lacking established best practices. Educators like Chad Sussex advocate teaching students to critically evaluate AI responses to mitigate potential negative effects on their learning. This highlights an urgent need for effective frameworks addressing AI’s role in education.
