He forecasts that these agents will autonomously engage with the internet to fulfill specific objectives. As the inventor of the web and founder of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Berners-Lee continues to influence web technology, currently working on a personal AI assistant named “Charlie.” The W3C is focusing on establishing an “Agentic Web,” integrating AI capabilities with web standards. This initiative includes projects like the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which supports the development of various AI-driven web applications, such as MCP-UI and NLWeb, geared towards enhancing user interaction with sites. The AI Agent Protocol Community Group is exploring new protocols to standardize these advancements. Major companies like Cloudflare and Shopify are already deploying these technologies, indicating that while the Agentic Web is evolving, its full potential is still in development.
