OpenAI has launched a significant update to ChatGPT with the introduction of Study Mode, a feature aimed at fostering genuine learning among students. Traditionally viewed as a tool for cheating, ChatGPT is repositioning itself as an educational companion that promotes skill development rather than merely providing answers. Leah Belsky, VP of education at OpenAI, emphasized that while ChatGPT can enhance academic performance when used to teach, it can hinder learning when seen simply as an answer generator. The aim is to win over younger users, similar to strategies employed by Google, and to reimagine digital education through personalized AI experiences. Study Mode employs Socratic questioning, personalized feedback, and a focus on engagement to guide learners, fostering deep understanding over rote memorization. Designed with input from educational experts, this feature will increasingly integrate pedagogy into AI, marking a shift in how students interact with technology for learning.
