Two years ago, I wrote nearly all my code by hand; now, it’s only about 30%. This shift highlights an “AI prisoner’s dilemma”—individual choices to use AI boost productivity but lead to unpredictable consequences for work and craft. AI tools like GitHub Copilot have reduced my coding significantly, transforming my role from developer to manager of AI agents. While I find the current landscape productive and interesting, there’s an underlying tension over where this is headed.
Adopting AI feels inevitable, but each decision contributes to broader industry shifts that are difficult to coordinate against. Various future scenarios range from a soft landing where humans and AI collaborate, to disruptive change causing widespread displacement, or a post-hype stagnation.
Ultimately, it’s crucial to be intentional about AI adoption. As I ponder the future for my soon-to-arrive child, I recognize our current choices will shape the world for generations to come, even amidst uncertainty.
