The Imminent AI Agent Revolution: Why It’s Still on the Horizon

The term “agentic AI” is trending in enterprise tech, touted as the next evolution of digital assistants that operate autonomously. However, recent Gartner research shows a stark contrast: only 15% of IT leaders are considering or deploying fully autonomous AI agents, despite 75% engaging with some form of AI. This hesitancy is due to governance and security concerns, with 81% lacking trust in vendors to mitigate AI hallucinations. Moreover, only 26% anticipate transformative productivity gains from AI agents. Many organizations struggle with alignment between IT, business users, and leadership on AI objectives, often defaulting to low-impact applications like office productivity tools. High-value areas such as analytics (64%) and customer service (55%) remain underexplored. Gartner advises a cautious approach—implement platform-agnostic governance, target impactful domains, and avoid vendor lock-in. Ultimately, while the hype surrounding agentic AI is significant, meaningful deployment remains limited.
