A study from MIT’s Media Lab examined the impact of using ChatGPT on critical thinking abilities among young adults. It involved 54 participants who wrote essays using ChatGPT, Google search, or with no assistance. Results showed that ChatGPT users displayed the lowest brain engagement and cognitive performance, often resorting to copy-pasting by the end. Conversely, the brain-only group demonstrated higher neural connectivity and creativity, while Google users also performed well. The findings raised concerns about the potential harm generative AI could inflict on learning, particularly for younger users, as it may inhibit deeper learning and memory integration. The study’s author, Nataliya Kosmyna, emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue, advocating for balanced AI usage in education. Although the paper awaits peer review, Kosmyna warned against over-reliance on AI tools, noting that they may hinder critical thinking and problem-solving skills in broader contexts, including workforce implications in fields like software development.
