Top UK Radiologist Cautions Against Overdiagnosis Due to AI Tools

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools in radiology are currently not saving time for most radiologists and may contribute to overdiagnosis, according to Katherine Halliday, the outgoing president of the Royal College of Radiologists. In an interview with The BMJ, Halliday noted that despite the digital shift in radiology, the push for more AI integration risks exacerbating existing challenges in the field. The college’s autumn 2024 workforce census revealed that 56% of UK radiology departments using AI saw no change in workload, while 37% reported an increase. While AI can assist in diagnostic tasks like reviewing CT images and marking tumours for radiotherapy, Halliday argues that existing algorithms fail to address the most significant issues in the specialty. The Royal College of Radiologists aims to lead in effectively utilizing AI, but current implementations may not be focusing on what matters most for radiologists and their patients.
