TRAI Unveils AI Solutions to Combat Spam Calls and Messages

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed new amendments to the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR) to incorporate AI-based tools for effectively detecting and blocking spam calls and messages. This initiative aims to enhance regulatory oversight over “Principal Entities” – businesses sending commercial communications – by enforcing stricter checks on registered telemarketers and refining the handling of spam complaints. The amendments address the rapid evolution of spam techniques, including internet-based calling and novel messaging formats that evade traditional filtering. TRAI’s revised framework, originally established in 2018, focuses on the registration of telemarketers and consumer preferences, adapting to emerging technologies and industry practices. Stakeholders are invited to submit feedback by April 12, with counter-comments accepted until April 27. These enhancements reflect TRAI’s commitment to consumer protection amidst the growing challenges posed by spam communications in the telecommunications sector.
