Transforming AI Agents into Key Profit Drivers for Retailers

Retailers are urged to rethink merchandising strategies with the rise of agentic artificial intelligence (AI). Unlike traditional analytic tools, agentic AI autonomously plans, acts, and learns, allowing retailers to adjust prices and promotions in real time. This shift could free up to 40% of merchants’ time, enabling them to focus on strategy, product selection, and customer understanding. Currently, however, 71% of merchants report limited AI impact, largely due to data quality issues. Agentic AI systems address these challenges by autonomously reconciling fragmented data, running multiple scenarios, and providing actionable insights. The market for agentic AI in retail is projected to grow significantly, reaching $60 billion in 2023. Many retailers, including 47% currently using or evaluating AI, are set to leverage it for tasks like dynamic pricing and supply chain optimization. To succeed, retailers must redesign their operations, clarify decision-making processes, and invest in AI training while managing inherent risks.
