Transforming Education: Should Teachers Play a Role in Shaping AI in Classrooms?

Share

As artificial intelligence (AI) transforms K-12 education, educators must play a pivotal role, according to experts in AI-powered tools. Despite this, concerns about AI’s inaccuracies and a lack of professional development persist among teachers. Between spring and fall 2024, the percentage of teachers receiving AI training increased by 50%, yet 58% reported no training, leaving many feeling disadvantaged. Leaders from the recent ISTELive 25 + ASCD Conference highlighted that educators should not just use AI tools but also help develop them, especially those benefiting underserved communities. Wyman Khuu from Playlab.ai noted that teacher-created applications often resonate more than those developed solely by tech professionals. Professional development must evolve to ensure that it not only builds AI literacy but also prepares educators for leadership roles. Addressing skepticism is crucial—training should engage teachers’ concerns to foster collaborative solutions. Ultimately, a comprehensive approach can empower educators to shape AI’s future in education.
