Transforming UK Languages with NVIDIA Nemotron’s AI Technology

Celtic languages, including Welsh and Irish, are the U.K.’s oldest living languages. The UK-LLM initiative is developing an AI model using NVIDIA Nemotron to enhance reasoning capabilities in both English and Welsh, which is crucial for around 850,000 Welsh speakers. This initiative aims to improve public service accessibility in healthcare, education, and legal resources. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasizes the importance of AI in preserving cultural heritage and making services available in users’ native languages. Established in 2023, the UK-LLM project, led by University College London, aims to foster Welsh language use, aligning with the Welsh Government’s Cymraeg 2050 initiative for a million speakers. The model will not only benefit Welsh speakers but serves as a template for other U.K. languages and potentially for international languages. Developers can access this new model via Nscale’s API, contributing to the preservation and evolution of minority languages through cutting-edge AI technology.
