Trump’s New AI Action Plan: Deregulating Technology and Boosting Exports

The Trump administration has unveiled “America’s AI Action Plan,” a comprehensive strategy aimed at boosting U.S. AI innovation through over 90 policy reforms. Key objectives include streamlining AI infrastructure regulations, removing references to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and enforcing export controls. This marks a clear shift from the previous Biden administration’s focus on mitigating AI misinformation and climate impact. Under the plan’s three pillars—innovation, infrastructure, and international diplomacy—the government intends to promote federal AI adoption, amend the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework, and prioritize AI skills for American workers. Stripping back environmental regulations and enhancing the U.S. electrical grid form part of the infrastructure focus, while international efforts aim to strengthen exports and proprietary technology protections. Experts predict potential legal challenges for the plan’s DEI and bias elements, making the path forward in U.S. AI development uncertain.
