In her teaching approach, Sun emphasizes the importance of responsible AI integration in design education. “The goal is not to produce images quickly, but to cultivate reasoning, sensitivity, and intentional design choices,” she stated. By harnessing AI, students enhance their perceptual and design judgment, learning to respond to human emotions and user needs effectively. Self-directed learning is vital; Sun has developed an online platform that encourages independent exploration of AI alongside cross-disciplinary knowledge. This platform promotes the responsible use of AI tools while ensuring students remain informed in a fast-evolving domain. Sun asserts that while AI can provide information, it lacks the capability for judgment, urging students to guide AI with their reasoning and ethical considerations. This method empowers UC Industrial Design students to discover how AI can enhance creativity and reasoning without displacing the critical human judgment central to good design. Sun will present her findings at the HCI International Conference and contribute to the Design Management Journal.
