UK Considers $2.7 Billion Deal for Free ChatGPT Plus Access for All Citizens with OpenAI’s Sam Altman

The effectiveness of ChatGPT in education and development generates considerable debate. Advocates praise its ability to disseminate knowledge and enhance skills, while critics raise concerns about privacy and reliability. A recent report from The Guardian suggested that a UK minister considered negotiating a deal for free ChatGPT Plus membership for all 69.2 million UK residents. Estimated at nearly $1.5 billion, some sources claim the potential deal value could reach $2.7 billion. Secretary of State Peter Kyle, a proponent of AI technologies, discussed this with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, but the agreement ultimately fell through, possibly due to its high cost—a concern that Kyle reportedly didn’t take seriously. Despite the ethics surrounding AI and LLMs, the UK government remains optimistic about AI’s future role, having signed a memorandum of understanding with OpenAI to access government data for training purposes. The outcomes of such initiatives in improving public sector efficiency remain uncertain.
