OpenAI, the US AI leader behind ChatGPT, has entered a Memorandum of Understanding with the UK government to enhance the country’s AI ecosystem and boost economic growth. Announced by UK Technology Secretary Peter Kyle and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, this partnership aims to position Britain as an AI frontrunner while adhering to democratic values.
The collaboration will emphasize expanding AI security research, investing in data centre infrastructure, and leveraging AI in public services, including healthcare and education. OpenAI supports the UK’s AI Opportunities Action Plan, promoting new “AI Growth Zones” to attract private investments, with over 200 proposals submitted already.
Altman highlighted the UK’s rich scientific heritage and the need for actionable results, while Kyle noted AI’s potential to transform public services and create high-quality jobs. OpenAI plans to expand its London office, its first international branch, to further develop advanced AI models and support local startups, marking a significant milestone for the UK’s AI future.
