Ukraine is set to develop its own large-scale language model (LLM), focusing on the Ukrainian language and cultural context, as announced by Digital Transformation Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. A memorandum was signed on June 17 with Kyivstar, which will serve as a strategic partner and investor in this initiative. The LLM aims to be trained on a unique dataset to enhance its understanding of Ukrainian nuances compared to foreign models. Fedorov emphasized that this project will lay the groundwork for new AI products, fostering startups and investments, and stimulating economic growth in Ukraine. Key advantages of the model include its quality, making it more relevant for local users, affordability, and secure data storage within Ukraine to protect state interests. The first version of this Ukrainian LLM is expected to be launched by the end of 2025, targeting government entities, universities, public organizations, and businesses.
