The United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union (ITU) emphasized the urgent need for advanced tools to combat misinformation and deepfake content, particularly concerning election interference and financial fraud. In a report from the “AI for Good Summit” in Geneva, the ITU highlighted the risks posed by AI-generated media, urging social media platforms to implement digital verification tools to establish the authenticity of shared content. Chief of the ITU’s Standardization Bureau, Bilel Jamoussi, noted the significant decline in trust in social media, underscoring the challenge of deepfakes enhanced by Generative AI. Experts like Leonard Rosenthol from Adobe stressed the necessity of establishing digital content provenance for user confidence. Additionally, Dr. Farzaneh Badiei called for a global approach, as the lack of a unified watchdog hinders effective solutions. The ITU is working on watermarking standards to ensure transparency in video content. Education and proactive measures are essential for safeguarding users from advanced AI threats.
