Understanding the Capabilities and Limitations of ChatGPT Health

More than 230 million people seek health advice from ChatGPT weekly, using the AI for symptoms like rashes or discomfort. OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Health, allowing users to connect personal health data, while Anthropic has introduced similar tools. Although these platforms promise personalized analysis, they come with disclaimers advising users to consult professionals. Research shows AI excels in diagnosis, with models like GPT-4 achieving over 90% accuracy in complex cases compared to 74% for human doctors. However, AI struggles in treatment recommendations, which require personalized context that models can’t provide. Importantly, these services are not HIPAA-compliant, raising concerns about data privacy and potential legal implications. While AI can help explain lab results and medical terms, it’s unproven in identifying health trends. Given the average wait for primary care, these tools can be beneficial, but they shouldn’t replace professional medical advice or examination.
