Google has launched a Search Labs test that introduces Audio Overviews to enhance its search engine. This feature allows testers to generate conversational audio summaries for specific queries, aiming to simplify complex topics with insights from credible sources. The Audio Overviews, which debuted in the NotebookLM app in September 2024, leverage the latest Gemini AI models for quick, user-friendly results. When available, users will see a “generate” button in their search results, leading to an audio summary tagged as a “Search Labs” experience. Each overview will include a play button and a duration indicator, along with citations detailing the source websites. Through this testing phase, Google encourages participant feedback to further refine the feature. While the Search version focuses on providing concise information, it differs from the more interactive NotebookLM, which allows users to explore content more deeply and engage with AI co-hosts. Users can join the Search Labs experience to participate.
