Unlocking AI’s Potential to Revolutionize Olympic Figure Skating

American figure skater Andrew Torgashev recently participated in an exclusive training camp held by U.S. Figure Skating, where elite athletes refine their skills for the Grand Prix season. During the camp, Torgashev executed a quad toe loop, a challenging four-revolution jump. While he appeared to land it flawlessly, analysis showed he was a quarter-revolution short, highlighting the importance of precision in scoring. The innovative app OOFSkate, developed by Jerry Lu and Jacob Blindenbach, uses AI technology to provide instant feedback on jumps, measuring elements like height, rotation, and landing quality without the need for sensors. This tech aims to enhance training and could one day assist in competition scoring. The system fosters comparisons between skaters and their past performances. OOFSkate, a project born from the duo’s passion for tech in sports, promises to make figure skating judging more objective, akin to advancements seen in tennis and baseball.
