Unlocking System Tasks: How to Use Perplexity’s macOS App with Anthropic’s MCP Support

Perplexity for macOS has introduced support for Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling users to connect the AI chatbot directly to their devices. This update, available to paid subscribers, allows for seamless interaction with local files and applications, such as searching Apple Notes or sending emails. Planned future updates will expand MCP to remote servers, enhancing connectivity for free-tier users. The MCP standard, open-sourced by Anthropic in November 2024, aims to facilitate data transfers between AI systems and data hubs like Google Drive. Currently, local MCP support on macOS doesn’t require remote authentication. To set up MCP, users must install the Perplexity Helper App and configure their MCP server through the app’s settings. Detailed instructions guide users through adding an MCP Connector and ensuring the server is operational. This integration enhances user experience by enabling Perplexity to perform tasks directly within the Mac ecosystem, supporting greater productivity.
