A recent workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Uttar Pradesh legislators generated diverse questions, reflecting both curiosity and skepticism. Legislators inquired about AI’s potential for voter engagement, constituency development, and political insights, while expressing concerns about data reliability and potential defamation. Led by IIT-Bombay’s Harshit Mishra, the session aimed to introduce AI tools to streamline Assembly operations, including attendance tracking and record-keeping, ahead of the upcoming Assembly session. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna emphasized that AI serves merely as a supportive tool, akin to upgrading from a bicycle to a motorcycle. While AI offers distinct advantages, it also has drawbacks, prompting some MLAs to admit their use of AI tools like ChatGPT for enhancing their speeches. Speaker Satish Mahana reassured legislators that AI could help monitor attendance and speech patterns, promoting a more accountable political framework. Ultimately, the workshop highlighted AI’s role in modern governance while addressing legislators’ pressing concerns.
