Urgent Alert for Parents: Government Takes Action Against ‘Nudify’ Apps Used for Child Exploitation

A former law enforcement officer is warning Australian parents against sharing their children’s photos online, emphasizing the rising threat of AI technologies misused to create child exploitation material. Communications Minister Anika Wells announced a government initiative to restrict access to AI capabilities, such as “nudify” apps, which predators exploit for child sexual abuse. At a recent round table featuring child safety experts, the alarming use of AI for generating “deepfakes” and automated grooming tactics was discussed. Danielle Kelly, a mother and child abuse prevention advocate, advised parents to make informed decisions about online posting. She highlighted the severe exposure law enforcement faces when investigating online child abuse cases. The government aims to combat this escalating issue, noting a doubling of reports from minors to e-Safety in the past 18 months. Efforts to criminalize the use of such AI tools include potential legislation to stop these dangers at their source.
