The US Army has launched ‘Detachment 201: The Army’s Executive Innovation Corps,’ aimed at fostering collaboration between big tech and the military. Four tech executives—Shyam Sankar (Palantir), Andrew Bosworth (Meta), Kevin Weil (OpenAI), and Bob McGrew (Thinking Machines Lab)—have been appointed as Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonels. Their mission is to encourage tech professionals to engage with the military without disrupting their careers. Each Lt. Col. is expected to serve at least 120 hours annually, contributing insights on AI and military optimization, while being exempt from basic training. This effort follows previous initiatives, like the Defense Innovation Board, which sought to bridge the gap between Silicon Valley and the military. Despite a historical hesitance from tech firms regarding military contracts, recent partnerships, such as Meta’s collaboration with Anduril and Palantir’s work with Amazon Web Services, reflect a growing acceptance and integration of military-tech alliances.
