A US-based software development agency, AI Health Studio, is embroiled in controversy over the creation of a medication prescription app called MediSafe. Commissioned by Roberta Pang, mother of a Hong Kong student, the app was developed between March 2024 and June 2023. However, it was submitted to academic competitions under the student’s name without the agency’s consent. Co-founder Ahmed Jemaa expressed concerns about the fairness of this situation, highlighting that the app’s true creators were not acknowledged. The app, designed to enhance prescription safety by flagging drug interactions and allergy warnings, has garnered eight awards in global competitions. Jemaa accused Pang of attempting to “control the narrative” following backlash regarding whether her daughter truly invented the application. This case raises questions about intellectual property, ethical practices in academic submissions, and the implications for fairness in student competitions.
