Major US tech firms, including Microsoft, OpenAI, Nvidia, Google, and Salesforce, have committed over £31 billion to expand AI and tech infrastructure in the UK. This commitment was announced during President Trump’s state visit to London, with key figures like OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman present. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer plans to streamline data center approvals and create an “AI Growth Zone” in northeast England, aiming to generate new jobs and improve access to the national power grid.
One significant initiative is OpenAI’s Stargate UK, collaborating with Nvidia and Nscale to enhance the UK’s computing capabilities for crucial sectors like finance and national security. Initial plans include deploying up to 8,000 GPUs, eventually scaling to 31,000. Microsoft aims to invest $30 billion, including building a supercomputer in London, while Nvidia has pledged £11 billion towards data center expansion. This move not only boosts UK infrastructure but also promises to reskill up to 7.5 million workers by 2030.
