A new Appknox report highlights a rising threat of fake apps impersonating trusted brands like ChatGPT and WhatsApp in US third-party app stores. The investigation reveals clones ranging from harmless interfaces to sophisticated surveillance tools. One such app, DALL·E 3 AI Image Generator, poses as a legitimate image generator, but merely connects to ad networks, misleading users with fake loading screens. While not classified strictly as malware, it operates as a “commercial parasite,” profiting from deception.
Conversely, WhatsApp Plus disguises itself as an enhanced messenger but acts as a spyware framework, secretly accessing sensitive data like contacts and OTPs, creating substantial risks for users and businesses alike—especially in regulated sectors like finance and healthcare, where compliance failures can lead to significant penalties.
While some apps, like the ChatGPT Wrapper, don’t contain hidden threats, they exist in a “grey zone.” Users must remain vigilant when downloading apps to avoid these potential vulnerabilities.
