Using AI in the Courtroom: Student Leverages ChatGPT and Gemini to Sue UW for Alleged Racial Discrimination

Stanley Zhong, a high-achieving Bay Area student with a 4.42 GPA and 1590 SAT score, faced unexpected rejection from 16 of the 18 colleges he applied to, including prestigious University of California schools. Despite his qualifications, including impressive rankings in international coding competitions, he secured an AI engineering job at Google, a position typically reserved for Ph.D. holders. His father, Nan Zhong, speculated that discrimination played a role in these rejections, echoing sentiments shared by other Asian American families. Unable to find legal representation willing to challenge the universities, he turned to AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini for crafting legal arguments. Lately, a federal judge sided with Zhong in procedural matters. Although acknowledging AI’s potential flaws, he believes it can match top legal expertise. The University of Washington defended its admission criteria, attributing Zhong’s rejection to being an out-of-state applicant for a competitive program.
