USPTO Aims to Integrate AI More Deeply into Its Operations

admin

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is enhancing its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities to improve efficiency in patent and trademark examination processes. Following a recent request for information (RFI), the agency seeks innovative, low-cost AI solutions to streamline document reviews and automate tasks such as drafting office actions and analyzing prior art. Ongoing AI initiatives include the More Like This Document (MLTD) tool, which assists examiners in finding related documents, and an internal automation tool, Doc Code quality control, to verify incoming documents. With a significant history of AI exploration, the USPTO emphasizes the importance of data quality and security. The agency is also testing generative AI tools like SCOUT for various applications, including compliance and threat detection. Plans for further tool expansion are anticipated as the USPTO recognizes the transformative potential of AI in its operations.
