Valve’s New Guidelines on Generative AI in Video Games
Valve has transformed how developers must disclose the use of generative AI in their games on Steam. This pivotal shift aims to clarify transparency while leveraging AI technology. Here’s what you need to know:
- AI Disclosure Required: Developers must now disclose when AI is used to generate content, whether for the game itself, its store page, or marketing materials.
- Two Types of AI Use:
- AI that generates content pre-launch.
- AI-generated content during gameplay (e.g., images, audio, text).
- Rising Trend: By mid-2025, approximately 8,000 titles disclosed AI usage, revealing the growing prevalence of generative AI in game development.
Despite the increase in AI tool usage, interest among developers is waning. Only 52% are engaged with AI tools, down from previous years.
