Vinod Khosla Accuses Windsurf Founders of Abandoning Their Team

Windsurf, an AI startup co-founded by Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen, is in the spotlight after a failed $3 billion acquisition by OpenAI. Following this setback, the founders left for Google DeepMind, leaving the rest of the team in disarray. Windsurf’s executives quickly formed a new partnership with Cognition, led by CEO Jeff Wang, who called the situation “crazy.” Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla criticized the founders for abandoning their team and not sharing potential profits, asserting on X, “Windsurf and others exemplify poor leadership.” He emphasized the importance of loyalty, noting, “It’s disappointing how founders have changed recently.” Despite the turmoil, Wang acknowledged the challenges for Mohan and Chen, describing them as “great founders.” This incident raises significant questions about founder responsibilities in the startup ecosystem and the ethical obligations towards remaining team members.
