Visa Develops Payment System for AI Agents to Shop for You

Visa is leading the evolution of agentic commerce, developing secure payment protocols enabling AI agents to conduct transactions on behalf of consumers. Collaborating with Google on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) alongside industry giants like Mastercard and Shopify, Visa is creating open-source standards for AI-mediated purchases. Rubail Birwadker, Visa’s SVP and Global Head of Growth Products, highlights the importance of ensuring security and consistency across various global markets, given the diverse regulatory environments. The company utilizes a token-based security infrastructure, which limits exposure of sensitive data and employs biometric verification. Visa’s emphasis on adaptable technology allows for effective payment processing that meets local requirements. As AI adoption in purchasing accelerates, Visa anticipates transformative impacts on consumer experiences, with agentic commerce complementing traditional retail and eCommerce, rather than replacing them. The goal is to facilitate seamless, secure transactions for millions globally while navigating emerging fraud risks.
