Walmart’s ChatGPT Checkout Stumbles: What’s on the Horizon?

Walmart’s trial of OpenAI’s Instant Checkout within ChatGPT has revealed concerning data: conversion rates for in-chat purchases were three times lower than traditional website checkouts. Daniel Danker, Walmart’s EVP of design and product, noted that this reflects major consumer behavior insights in AI-driven commerce. The Instant Checkout feature, initially launched in September 2025, encountered structural mismatches with typical shopping habits, particularly the single-item checkout process that frustrated consumers preferring multi-item carts. Moving forward, Walmart plans to embed its own chatbot, Sparky, into ChatGPT, enhancing user experience through basket synchronization across platforms, including the Walmart app and website. This change aims to meet customer expectations while capitalizing on ChatGPT’s effectiveness in acquiring new users at double the rate of search engines. As Walmart continues to evolve its AI-commerce strategy, the integration of Sparky represents a critical step in addressing consumer demands while improving conversion performance.
