Waymo is exploring the integration of Google’s Gemini chatbot into its robotaxis, aiming to enhance passenger experiences with an AI assistant. Researcher Jane Manchun Wong discovered a detailed system prompt, titled “Waymo Ride Assistant Meta-Prompt,” suggesting this could be a highly interactive AI, responding to passenger inquiries and controlling cabin functions like climate and lighting while maintaining a friendly demeanor.
Gemini, to be activated via a cabin screen, will engage with personalized greetings and context-aware interactions. However, its capabilities are limited; it can’t handle certain requests such as volume control or seat adjustments, responding instead with, “I can’t do that yet.” Additionally, Gemini will maintain a clear distinction from the Waymo Driver, refraining from technical explanations and redirecting sensitive questions. This initiative highlights the competitive landscape of AI assistants in autonomous vehicles, putting Waymo in direct competition with Tesla’s Grok. Overall, this underlines the increasing importance of AI in modern transportation.
